The issue of low-cost housing in South Africa is also of global social relevance. The Design Indaba 10×10 Low-Cost Housing Project aims to stimulate alternative solutions to housing and to truly “create a better future, by design”. In Cape Town some of the most impoverished families will benefit directly, but this project is also a powerful vehicle to stimulate a much wider debate, awareness and creative thought around the delivery of low-income housing.
The first qualifying solution came from Luyanda Mpahlwa, the Executive Director and partner of MMA Architects. For the 10 x 10 Low-Cost Housing project they had to design for a single-family home and leverage the extremely tight budget by borrowing elements from indigenous mud-and-wattle building techniques. The Cape Town studio of MMA Architects has since transformed into the new firm DesignSpace Africa under the leadership of Luyanda Mpahlwa
