Sanlam Portrait Award 2017

by | Aug 21, 2017 | News | 0 comments

The third Sanlam Portrait Award culminates with the highly anticipated TOP 40 exhibition – to be held at Rust-en-Vrede Gallery in Durbanville, and PORTRAIT 100 at Michaelis Galleries (UCT) respectively on the 25th and 26th of August.

This year, the national competition attracted 1,437 entries throughout South Africa. Due to the anonymous judging process, flexible age restrictions (18 +), and free use of the Stuttaford Van Lines Courier Service, all participants were deemed equal. Leveling the playing field and ensuring that the judges select their Top 100 portraits purely based on technicality, narrative and emotional appeal is the aim.

The Judges

In engaging with a huge number of high quality works created by numerous talented artists the three judges, Peter Monkman (British based portrait artist and teacher, 2009 Winner and 2015 Judge of the BP Portrait Award, and current director of Art at Charterhouse), Nkule Mabaso (Visual artist and highly respected curator of Michaelis Galleries) and Carl Jeppe (Visual artist and esteemed lecturer for 35 years at the Tshwane University of Technology) went the extra mile in curating the final eclectic mix of 40 contemporary portraits.

The winner will be announced on 24 August 2017 at the gala event.
