The 11th Suidoosterfees, which take place from Tuesday, 28 January 2014 until Sunday, 2 February 2014, offers a feast of music, culture, drama, comedy, song and dance.
Among the proramme of productions, the six-day festival will also showcase three that will focus on Cape Town’s World Design Capital 2014 title.
Cape Town’s iconic City Hall, the grand old dame which has become a cultural hub, is one of four venues for this year’s Suidoosterfees.
‘The City Hall, steeped in history and famed for its architecture, has become a sought-after venue for cultural events. The City is proud to be a sponsor of the Suidoosterfees which this year features three productions which focus on Cape Town as World Design Capital (WDC) 2014,’ says the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Marketing, Councillor Grant Pascoe.
The first of the three, ‘Reimagine Cape Town’, an exhibition of works by 40 artists, all focused on the Mother City and connecting to the theme of World Design Capital 2014. Their work will be exhibited until Sunday, 2 February 2014 in the Artscape Marble Foyer Extension and entrance is free. The artists, 20 professionals and 20 students, were given a black frame as a starting point and were free to decide how to use it.
The other two events with a WDC 2014 focus include the dance production ‘Kaapstad Dance’ and the concert ‘Kaapstad Klassiek’.
In addition to City Hall, Suidoosterfees venues include the Artscape Theatre, the Fugard Theatre, and the Garden Court Theatre at Tsogo Sun on Nelson Mandela Boulevard.
There will be 11 premieres which promise entertainment for all with star attractions such as Lizz Meiring, Sarah Theron, Zethu Dlomo, Duncan Johnston, Brendon Daniels and Mbulelo Grootboom.
Because the Suidoosterfees takes place in the CBD, residents can attend the festival while shopping and running errands.

The World Design Capital title is awarded every two years by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) to give global prominence to cities that use design for their cultural, social, and economic development.
Cape Town won the title for 2014 on the back of its commitment to the transformative power of design, as evidenced by the payoff line: Live design. Transform life.
