Emancipation Day: Walk in the Night

Join us on this walk of remembrance on the 180th anniversary on the eve of emancipation – Sunday 30 November at 10pm, writes Bonita Bennet.

“180 years ago, on 1 December 1834, the enslaved people at the Cape were freed by legislation. It was the culmination of years of struggle, solidarity, resistance and unimaginable suffering.

The legacy of this past period of slavery together with current, modern forms of slavery, are with us still. So even as we commemorate this historic past, we have to resolve how we deal with its legacies and new forms of slavery which continue to shackle many in so many new ways.

Imagining the charged atmosphere on the night before emancipation, we seek to understand how those most closely affected experienced such anxious anticipation.

We will greet the new day of freedom together” says host Bonita Bennet.
