The Cape Town Cycle Tour will once again showcase the City’s ability to host international events. The cycle race, one of the biggest sporting events in Cape Town, harnesses the trust and investor confidence that Cape Town has earned through the years as an international events destination.

On Sunday 10 March 2019, more than 35 000 cyclists will once again line up for an early morning start in the biggest individually timed cycle race in the world.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour is a highly popular signature event on the City’s annual events calendar that builds on a proud tradition of cycling and shows that sport and tourism are catalysts for economic growth and job creation.

The event organisers have already started setting up on the Grand Parade and the City is pleased with the preparations for the event.

‘It is often asked what makes the Cape Town Cycle Tour so popular – one of the reasons is most definitely the beautiful scenic route winding its way around the Cape Peninsula. The Cycle Tour also accommodates all categories of cyclists, from professional and elite riders to social riders who are just out to have fun with other cyclists and friends,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

Motorists are advised to take note of the temporary road closures that will be in place over the weekend and to plan their trips accordingly. The complete list of road closures is available here

‘We want to wish all of the participants well for their big day; whether you are going for a personal best time, doing your first or tenth Cycle Tour or are participating just to experience the scenic route, remember that safety on the road is paramount.

‘It’s the spectators and supporters that will cheer and get you up and over the steep climbs, especially Suikerbossie, as you cycle along the Atlantic seaboard towards the finish line. This is what this great event is all about; the camaraderie, respect for your fellow cyclists, the scenery and the friendly supporters along the way. This is why people are coming back year after year – even veterans who thought they’d had enough are coming back for more race.

‘We are hoping for favourable weather conditions on the day and wish cyclists a safe ride as they put power to the pedal and navigate their way around the peninsula,’ added Alderman Smith.
