The Cape Town Concert Series presents clarinettist David Krakauer in concert with Kathleen Tagg on Saturday 27 September at 8pm in the Baxter Concert Hall.
Widely considered one of the greatest clarinetists of his generation, David Krakauer has been praised internationally as a key innovator in modern klezmer as well as a major voice in classical music.
‘Only a select few artists have the ability to convey their message to the back row, to galvanize an audience with a visceral power that connects on a universal level. David Krakauer is such an artist.’ Cape Town has been fortunate to have heard him in concert at the Baxter Concert Hall in 2012, and in a wild and wonderful klezmer concert in the Baxter Theatre in 2013.
Krakauer is an American original who has embarked on a tremendous journey transforming the music of his Eastern European Jewish heritage into something uniquely contemporary. That journey has lead him to an astounding diversity of projects and collaborations ranging from solo appearances with orchestras to major festival concerts with his own improvisation based bands.
David comes to Cape Town to perform with American based South African pianist Kathleen Tagg and will also feature the violin and cello of Suzanne and Peter Martens.
The programme follows a spiritual theme beginning with Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time – widely regarded as one of the most ethereally beautiful pieces of music written. This is followed by Brahms’ Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano which holds a special place in David’s heart and then he will finish with a selection of Klezmer pieces for which he is especially renowned.
