Cantor Ivor Joffe and the Playing with Fire Klezmer Band, led by Matthew Reid will in a concert entitled “Ot Azoi!”

Klezmer is the instrumental music of the Ashkenazy Jews from Lithuania and Latvia, such as was made popular in the movie Fiddler on the Roof.  Klezmer is essentially dance music and yet it is in a minor mode: at the same time cheerful and sorrowful music that has that particular ‘kvetch’.

The programme includes the favourites like Arum Dem Feuer, Dayne, Budapescht and Rumania, and some new additions Dos Lidl von dem Goldenem Land and Nigundl. The klezmer band consists of leader Matthew Reid (clarinet), Kerryn Torrance (violin), Andre van Vuuren (accordion), Brydon Bolton (double bass) and James van Minnen (percussion).

“I hope you enjoy this programme, which consists of some old favourites and some new additions to our repertoire,” says music ‘mayvin’ Matthew Reid.

Matthew will have copies of the CD’s Cape Town Shpiel and Cape Town Zing on sale and which he’ll sign for you.
