Ben Coutouvidis in his new show ‘Chimera’ – the artist contemplates how trees and humans have been shaping each other for millennia. He examines this relationship that we take for granted so easily.
In this new solo exhibition, Coutouvidis creates paintings referencing locally found wood and scenes that relate to their original roots through visual storytelling.
“This exhibition is a simple reassertion of wood as the subject”
Alongside two dimensional works the artist has also created a series of Chimerical objects – sculptures that are made from incongruous parts which are the product of his visionary imagination. Coutouvidis’s artworks are a response to a rapidly changing world where the Chimerical process has become the norm.
“I have learnt that by transferring ‘parts’ to a ‘whole’, both the parts and the whole are entirely subjective and what I am transferring is something conscious as well as unconscious. This means that in my studio I am always trying to make sure that I understand things as simply as they are. Before figurative wooden sculpture can arise, simple carpentry must come first. In the painting of the wooden boat, I am aware that it looks like a painting of a boat, it is not trying to be illusionistic, I am not wanting the painting to be something else”
- The exhibition can be viewed in person and on Artsy.
