The much anticipated Annual Wildlife 2026 Group Exhibition at The Cape Gallery opens on Saturday 1 August, running wild to 31 August. And the gallery will be open until 7pm on the 6th August for First Thursday.

Quotation from J.M. Coetzee’s metafictional novella exploring animal rights and human morality through the lectures of Elizabeth Costello, Coetzee’s fictional alter ego. Published by Princeton University Press in 1999, this fable was presented as a Tanner Lecture sponsored by the University Centre for human values at Princeton University.
A Nobel Prize winning writer, J.M. Coetzee draws us into Elizabeth Costello’s own sense mortality, her compassion for animals, her sense that human nature presents an existential threat to them resulting in her personal sense of alienation. Her emotional lecture opens the floor to a measured discussions as professors of philosophy and poetics speak their understanding of truth as defined by their discipline.

Wild creatures have a voice but not one we can understand. Many species face extinction and as human beings who hunt, farm and use the land we share with them, it is becoming increasingly apparent that we do not have sufficient understanding to control their existence and jeopardise our own in not acknowledging this. Wildlife 2026 is a group exhibition of committed Wildlife artists presenting the animals as they see them.
