The Montebello Heritage Tree Walk, during Arbour Week, will be lead by Clare Burgess through the grounds of Montebello Design Centre on Friday 6 September.
Clare Burgess is Chair of TreeKeepers Cape Town which is an NPO focusing on conservation of trees in our URBAN FOREST.
One of the aspects of this is that many of our mature trees are under threat from a number of issues and this walk will concentrate on how lucky we are to have a patch of healthy, significant, heritage trees which create a valuable amenity for the public to visit.
“We will walk around Montebello and feel the energy of these trees and learn about where they come from and why. We will finish with a light lunch at the Picnic Cafe where our thoughts about trees can be explored further” says Clare.
Some of the trees were planted in the mid 17th century but most planted by Ralph Henry Arderne in the mid 19th century along with the much loved ARDERNE GARDENS. Many of the trees are identical and form part of the history of tree planting at the Cape reflecting the Victorian idea of “gardens from around the world in your garden”. They are mostly therefore exotic coming from other parts of South Africa and around the Globe. Chosen for their resilience to our Mediterranean climate they now help, as all trees do, to mitigate climate change in our City by providing shade and reducing temperatures.
