Natalie Du Preez is the Century City Arts Foundation Project & Communications Manager. She explains that the Foundation saw the aesthetic importance of art to provide character and a particular sense of presence to Century City.
There are 190 artworks to view for free – 32 in their permanent collection. Media includes mosaics, murals and sculptures. There’s sure to be something that will appeal to you.
Sculptor Anton Smit has a collection of 33 works of feminine figures. Natalie highlights the Long March To Freedom, which comprises 102 life-sized bronze sculptures of historical figures of people that shaped South African history. This is the largest collection of bronze sculptures anywhere in the world! Johnny Clegg is the most recent addition to the procession, led by Winnie and Nelson Mandela. The Long March To Freedom speaks to all of us.
Looking ahead, Natalie says that they are working on something very exciting, but she cannot reveal anything yet, other that it will be the biggest mural done so far, and it’s in a new area. A good reason for inviting Natalie back when this becomes public!
Adding a cultural element provides a sense of neighbourhood. Century City is not only a shopping centre, it’s a vibrant, new place in Cape Town, with many reasons to visit. The challenge is getting that message across, which is why Natalie is so pleased to be talking about the Century City Art Trail on the Arts Round Up to help make it more accessible. There are maps available to the Anton Smith Collection and the Permanent Collection.
LOTS of good reasons for heading for Century City for a unique cultural experience, that adds to Cape Town being rated as number 5 in Time Out – World’s 20 Best Cities for Art & Culture in 2026!
