‘Art’, which comes to The Baxter Flipside, is a French-language play by Yasmina Reza that premiered in 1994 at Comédie des Champs-Élysées in Paris. The play subsequently ran in London in 1996 and on Broadway in 1998.
This South African production has also earned widespread acclaim, receiving several awards and nominations, including the Kanna Award and the Woordtrofee for Best Ensemble, as well as the Kanna Award for Best Production at the 2025 Klein Karoo National Arts Festival (KKNK). Beyond differences in taste, debates about what constitutes art, and even what makes art good, have sparked countless arguments over the years. The friendship of three long-time friends, Serge, Marc and Yvan, is pushed to breaking point when Serge purchases a large and expensive painting. What begins as a disagreement about the value of a work of art soon evolves into a much deeper conflict, exposing tensions and truths that extend far beyond aesthetics.
The three friends are played by Wessel Pretorius, Ludwig Binge and Wilhelm van der Walt!
