On the FMR Arts Round Up, Janet Loggenberg, Managing Director of the Artists Gallery, gives us the background to the gallery establishing itself in Cape Town, after several years of promoting South African artists abroad.

Jaret explains that Barbara Leonard, the spokesperson of the travelling art gallery, took artists abroad and did big pop-up exhibitions in Europe. Jaret in fact persuaded Barbara to bring it back to Cape Town, which is their home. With Barbara’s assistance and drive, they set up the Artists Gallery, which is now 3 years old. Jaret tells us of some of their highlights and where they are going.
They never expected the Artists Gallery to be such a success. They expanded into their second space, 33BREE, where they exhibit other artists, who are not part of the established gallery.” As She Is” an exhibition that started in Hamburg, Germany, is coming to Cape Town in October. This is an exhibition by nine female South African artists. Being all women, Jaret suggests that they’ll depend on men to be the cheerleaders in this exhibition.
Travelling between Germany and beyond, and in Cape Town, what has emerged is the rich response not only from Europe, but also American clients, which has now become their focus and target. This is somewhere they could expand into. But it’s been particularly rewarding to see how, from a small group, the local art community has grown and the impact it has had on their careers. It’s ben amazing. A recent highlight was the Art on the Mountain, exhibition, where they had the work of 45 artists, who had been on a workshop on the iconic mountain. The work was then shown at 33BREE. The artworks also have a special appeal to overseas visitors, who are looking to take back memories of their visit. Jaret insists that they have to “think BIG”.
The gallery has certainly had a vey active exhibition programme, introducing a wide number of artists working in a broad range of media. Jaret confirms that you will find works in oil and acrylic on canvas, sculptures, mixed media and ceramics. Literally they have everything for everyone! Also worth mentioning, that although it is called 33BREE, the new space is just down the road in Waterkant Street.
