On the Arts Round Up, Nathalie Viruly, a Curatorial Researcher at Zeitz MOCAA, informs about a project called IMPRINT, which is part of their Atelier Programme that has been running for many years, with artists such as Berni Searle and Igshaan Adams. It’s a residency Zeitz MOCAA hosts artists for 6 to 9 months.

This year Zeitz MOCAA is focusing on publishing and they have invited three collectives (B)andWi(d)th, Medupi Publishing, and Creative Knowledge Resources – each will have a 6 month residency at the museum. It will be a very full programme, as each is very different in what they bring to the atelier and how they work, But it’s all about publishing and to do so from a museum context. This is all being done in the Koyo Kouoh Atelier, named after the past Director who was so passionate about this project, which is about bringing together various parts of the art world. It’s about public interaction and the public is asked to be part of the unfolding that happens. The public can engage and meet the artist and engage with the process. Publishing is seen as very expansive. Radio is even a part of the publishing realm.
There will be a programme, but the atelier is open when the museum is open, butat times, the publisher might not always be present. Publishing is seen as very expansive. Radio is even a part of the publishing realm. For the first time, the museum is bringing into the public arena their African Resource Centre, which is a library – a curative resource that is their “brain”, normally hidden. It’s now open to the public from Monday to Friday, when it is staffed. The programme will offer times when one can enter into meaningful discussions with the resident publisher. To Nathalie ‘artist’ and ‘publisher’ are one and the same. They way they are working speaks to art and life in a daily sense.
Zeitz MOCAA will also make public a publication they have just done – an online publication called Everything But The Exhibition, and it focuses on the smaller moments or markets that make an impression on institutions which ae more experimental. And Zeitz MOCAA are certainly leading the way in that resect!
