AVA Gallery – GEOMATICS: LAND | LAW | ORE Panel Discussion 24 May

The AVA Gallery invites you to a panel discussion on the impact of law on land and mineral rights, drawing from Jeannette Unite’s solo exhibition, GEOMATICS: LAND | LAW | ORE. This will be on Saturday 24 May, to hear from Unite in conversation with artist and art historian Thembinkosi Goniwe and Professor of Geomatics Jennifer Whittal.

Thembinkosi Goniwe is an artist, art historian and lecturer who has curated exhibitions and exhibited his work in the United States, Europe and South Africa. Goniwe draws attention to contemporary African visual arts, postcolonial criticism, and the black radical thought.

Jennifer Whittal is a Professor in the Geomatics Division at the University of Cape Town. As a professional Land Surveyor and lecturer in advanced surveying and land law, Whittal has co-authored the book Cadastre and focuses on pro-poor, historical landholding and cadastral issues.

Since living on African west coast with its alluvial diamond mines in the 1990s, Jeannette Unite has focused on Africa’s rich and contentious mineral histories and the ways in which humans exploit our planet. Her artistic, archival, and on-the-ground research dwells on the ongoing role of mining in (re)producing colonial power relations – and our own complicity.
