Baxter Theatre Present a Compelling Line-up of Theatre for April

This April, The Baxter Theatre are proud to present a compelling line-up of theatre, with work that is bold, thought-provoking and artistically distinctive. And here’s the info from their April Newsletter sent out by Fahiem Stellenboom.

STUPID FUCKING BIRD
From 9 April to 2 May, Aaron Posner’s Stupid Fucking Bird takes flight in the Studio. Directed by Maria Weisby, this bold and darkly funny reimagining of Chekhov’s The Seagull explores ambition, longing, love, fame and the search for meaning through a contemporary lens. Featuring the Fires Burning Company, with two additional actors, it promises a sharp, emotionally charged experience.

mAnJE ! MaNJe (an epic)

Running from 17 to 25 April in the Flipside, Magnet Theatre’s mAnJE! MaNJe (an epic) is a striking and imaginative production that draws on the story of Daedalus to reflect on the human condition in the age of the machine, big data and climate catastrophe. HATCHED ENSEMBLE by Mamela Nyamza

On 29 and 30 April, Mamela Nyamza, a recent recipient of the prestigious 2026 Biennale Danza Silver Lion and finalist nominee of the Top Five Artists around the World Salavisa European Dance (SEDA) Award, brings HATCHED ENSEMBLE to the Pam Golding Theatre. Inspired by her acclaimed 2007 solo work HATCHED, this new production continues Nyamza’s fearless artistic language, challenging convention and re-examining inherited forms with urgency, honesty and power. Catch the open rehearsal on 29 April at 14:00, with tickets from R100 to R150.

THE HERD/LESS by Mamela Nyamza
Looking just beyond April, THE HERD/LESS follows on 1 and 2 May in the Pam Golding Theatre, offering audiences another opportunity to experience Nyamza’s bold choreographic voice. This time, exploring collectives of people and animals being controlled as a group, rather than as individuals, by cultural or physical tools.

Wayne McKay’s Afrisnaaks brings an unapologetically Afrikaans brand of stand-up to the Baxter, celebrating the quirks, characters and textures of Cape Flats life with quick wit and recognisable local flavour.
