Berman Contemporary warmly invites you to the opening of After the Tide, a solo exhibition by internationally recognised Dutch artist Thirza Schaap, that opens on 6 February in collaboration with the HEAT Winter Festival.
Working with plastic collected from coastlines, Schaap creates sculptural arrangements and photographs that draw on the visual language of the still life. Seductive at first encounter, the works
gradually reveal the enduring residue of contemporary consumer life, inviting us to reconsider the objects that circulate through our everyday lives.
For the opening, Berman Contemporary has invited VIVIERS Studio to present a curated selection of garments that enter into dialogue with Schaap’s work.
Working across different disciplines, both practices explore how discarded materials can be reimagined through contemporary making, creating a conversation between contemporary art and fashion. Schaap transforms plastic waste gathered from shorelines into sculptural compositions and photographs that initially resemble elegant still lifes. Their seductive colours and forms gradually reveal the environmental consequences of global consumption, asking viewers to pause, look again and reconsider what we discard
