BREAKING BREAD – over three Saturdays in July, Camilla Pontiggia, activates the Berman Contemporary through a series of live encounters with her exhibition UNBOUND that unfold through bread, clay, textiles, food, and acts of gathering.
Part performance, part communal experience, these encounters invite visitors to witness artistic process as it happens and, at times, become participants in the work itself.
No two Saturdays will be the same.
Performance Encounters: Saturdays • 11, 18 & 25 July 11:00–13:00
Each encounter begins with a performative gesture of approximately 20–30 minutes before unfolding into a more informal period of conversation and participation.
Bread sculptures are broken and shared. Clay boards accumulate. Textiles are mended. Visitors are invited to observe, ask questions, and experience the residency as it evolves in real time.

MEET THE ARTIST – Camilla Pontiggia
Camilla Pontiggia is a Johannesburg-based artist, filmmaker, and researcher whose practice explores embodied forms of knowledge, care, memory, and repair.
Through bread, clay, textiles, and acts of mending, the project explores how artistic practice can become a way of repairing relationships, histories, and ways of being together.
UNBOUND is Berman Contemporary’s annual artist residency programme. Each July, the gallery becomes a working studio, inviting one artist to develop a project in public over the course of a month. Rather than presenting completed artworks, UNBOUND makes artistic research, experimentation, and process visible to visitors.
