The Cape Town Diamond Museum provides a unique, personally guided tour through the history of diamond mining in South Africa and Yair Shimansky talks us through this special experience on the Sanlam Arts Round Up.

Yair explains what motivated him to create the Cape Town Diamond Museum that would focus on Kimberley and the diamond rush that started there in 1867. Although there is a Diamond Museum in Kimberley, not many people get to see it. A museum in Cape Town would reach out to a much broader audience. The Museum is located in the Clock Tower Centre at the V&A Waterfront, which makes is extremely accessible.
He stated collecting information and material that would tell that story and explain the journey of the stone from mine to finger.
You will get a sense of location and the impact of the world wide diamond rush. There’s a focus on the key characters in the development of the industry in South Africa. The trend for the diamond engagement ring emanates from this time. And in fact the most development in the diamond trade has been over the past 70 to 80 years. It is also significant that Kimberly and the North West Province remain the largest source of diamonds.
Charlene Theron also features – when she received her Oscar for “Monster”, she wore a monster of a diamond for the occasion. Get to know more about that at the museum.
You are able to see the workshop where diamond jewellery is being created by master craftsmen and witness the cutting and polishing of these gemstones.
