The 25th edition of the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival has kicked off for its month-long run, featuring local and international comics. The City of Cape Town is a proud partner of the festival.
- The funny festival will host no less than 27 shows at the Baxter Theatre for a run that will conclude on 7 July 2024.
The 2024 schedule includes performances by comedic talents, including Dalin Oliver, Khanyisa Bunu, Dillan Oliphant, Sifiso Nene, Kagiso KG Mokgadi and Yaseen Barnes.
American circus artist/comedian, Mario Queen of the Circus and British-Armenian comedic pianist, Kev Orkian return to Cape Town to join the likes of award-winning local performers Emo and Loukmaan Adams and comedy supremo, Alan Committie for the full run of the festival.
Jaryd Pillay, who won the Jive Funny Championship, along with the two runners up from the competition, will also get the opportunity to shine on the festival main stage.
‘Celebrating 25 years of existence in the events space is a major milestone and the City is proud to be associated with the festival. Since its inception, the Cape Town Funny Festival has served as a much-needed morale booster during difficult times. It is a place where lovers of comedy go for a good time and a platform that has seamlessly integrated local and international acts to foster cultural exchange. This year’s programme also promises more of the same including laughs, flair and all-round entertainment. There are still some tickets for those looking for an evening of belly laughs,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
Founded in 1997, the festival has opened its stage to over 100 performers, including providing an opportunity to emerging comics over the last two and half decades.
- From Trevor Noah, Riaad Moosa, Marc Lottering to Jimmy Carr, the Funny Festival has become a global comic institution. Over that period, it has hosted talent such as Tumi Morake, Nik Rabinowitz, Alan Committie, Lee Mac, Adam Hills, Russell Peters, Paul Zerdin, Nina Conti, Tape Face and many others from around the globe.
The Funny Festival’s long-standing legacy is rooted in its ability to attract globally recognised comedians, while also providing a platform to new comics looking to make it onto the international stage.
The introduction of the Jive Funny Championship has provided the funny festival with a wider pool of new talent to select for its programme. The championship, held over eight weeks ahead of the main festival, has served as a showcase for emerging comics looking for a foothold in the industry. The winner gets to perform on the main stage during the Funny Festival’s run.
