The Mother City is doing a bang-up job of making people feel welcome. According to Big 7 Travel, Cape Town is one of the world’s friendliest cities, reports Tom Head in The South African

Well, would you look at that? It seems like the Mother City is doing a great job of taking care of its visitors, as Cape Town has officially been ranked as one of the world’s friendliest cities by Big 7 Travel.

Now, of course, there will be those who baulk at the suggestion – we can already sense Joburgers and Durbanites turning green with envy – but we can assure you, CPT’s accolade is more than well-deserved: The Cape is home to a fantastic bunch of residents, and we’re proud to call them our fellow citizens.

Why Cape Town is “one of the friendliest cities in the world”

The tourist hot-spot knows exactly how to turn on the charm for the international crowds, but this is also a city that knows how to create a stirring sense of local pride. In reviewing their decision, Big 7 – who are specialists in publishing travel-related data – praised Cape Town for its warmth and diversity:

“Cape Town’s locals are full of life and warmth and instantly welcome visitors to the city. It’s a safe city for travellers (once you explore with some common sense!) with a diverse mix of locals and an exciting energy. Our readers scored it highly on first impressions, putting it firmly as one of the friendliest cities in the world.” – Big 7 Travel

Where are the world’s friendliest cities?

Elsewhere, it perhaps comes as no surprise that Canada is home to the world’s friendliest city outright. Vancouver, on the West Coast, tops the table due to its “amazing multicultural community”. Kuala Lumpur is a close second, and there’s also good news for South African export Percy Tau. The Bafana Bafana player has recently completed his move to Club Bruges in Belgium. The city is ranked as the third-friendliest in the world. Although, Tau himself may need to mind his manners – he was sent off during a Champions League game for the side earlier this week. Taipei (Taiwan) and Hamburg (Germany) complete the top five.

1. Vancouver, Canada
2. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
3. Bruges, Belgium
4. Taipei, Taiwan
5. Hamburg, Germany
6. Dublin, Ireland
7. Christchurch, New Zealand
8. Nashville, United States of America
9. São Paulo, Brazil
10. Glasgow, Scotland

Cape Town, meanwhile, finds itself sandwiched between some very illustrious competitors:

13. Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
14. Cape Town, South Africa
15. Athens, Greece

In total, there are three more African cities that make up the top 50: Nairobi in Kenya comes in at 21, whereas Lilongwe in Malawi occupies 26th spot. Casablanca, Morroco just squeaks onto the list in 49th place. Here’s looking at you, Cape Town!
