Five concerts, two galas, two conductors, two pianists, two violinists, one orchestral showcase, and three different weekdays make the CPO Summer Symphonies at the City Hall season a unique one!
The season opens with Arjan Tien conducting the first of two concerts, on Thursday, November 6, with Jan Hugo as soloist in the Saint-Saëns Piano Concerto no 5, known as “The Egyptian”. The main work will be the Symphony no 2 in e minor by Rachmaninov. Tien’s second concert, on November 13, will feature violinist Jack Liebeck in The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams and the Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso by Saint-Saëns. The final work will be the 5th Symphony by Shostakovich.
Gueller’s Mahler on Saturday, November 22, is a celebration of the 30 years that Bernhard Gueller, the CPO’s principal conductor since 2016, has spent contributing to classical music in Cape Town. The gala concert marks his debut as Conductor Laureate for Life, an honour never before bestowed in Cape Town.
The following Wednesday 26, Gueller will conduct the Brahms Symphony no. 1, with Austrian pianist Philipp Scheucher as the soloist in the 4th Piano Concerto by Beethoven.
The season comes to end on Thursday, December 4, with Louis’ Legacy, a tribute to Louis Heyneman, who has been at the helm of the CPO since its inception in 2000. Heyneman’s legacy is remarkable, as he has created and sustained an orchestra which is regarded as the foremost in Africa. Gueller will be on the podium in this all-Tchaikovsky concert which will include some musicians from the CPYO, the flagship of the youth education and transformational programme that Heyneman introduced 22 years ago. American violinist Miclen LaiPang returns to Cape Town to perform that Violin Concerto, while the concert will conclude with the 5th Symphony.
