Cosy up to a creative wonderland at Kuier@TheCastle on Saturday 27 July that includes a free walkabout of the William Fehr Collection by Iziko Curator Esther Esmyol.

Kuier@TheCastle, the Cape Town CBD’s biggest family-friendly creative and lifestyle event, will be bursting with new creative additions this month, featuring several fun creative workshops for the whole family and offering an immersive craft and arts experience. Hosted by the Craft + Design Institute (CDI), in collaboration with the Castle of Good Hope, this monthly event has grown substantially, delighting Cape Town locals and visitors alike.

  • The Kuier@TheCastle event is ideal for the entire family, combining the discovery of exquisite local artisanal products and creative workshops with delectable local foods and live music performances. Additionally, all visitors will enjoy access to all the Castle’s museums throughout the day. And there’s a July add on of a FREE walkabout of the William Fehr Collection that is housed in a glamorous part of the Castle of Good Hope.

“It has been a fantastic way to bring locals and visitors together to discover a wide range of creative experiences and products, and it’s generated over R700,000 in trade value for local craft artisans and other creatives. Set within one of South Africa’s most iconic tourism landmarks, the market provides a vibrant platform for celebrating local stories and heritage,” says Fran Stewart, Market Development Programme Manager at the CDI.

“The event also offers a fantastic platform for visitors to explore their own creativity through a host of engaging workshops, making it a perfect family outing.”

Kuier@the Castle 27 JulyCreative crafts to beat the winter blues –
The 27 July event will feature several fun creative workshops, including:
Scented Diffusers – Free! Make your own scented diffuser for your home or car with a selection of fragrance oils. Offered all day from 10am to 4pm at the free Kuier Creative Corner.
The Craft of Crochet by Busy Hands – a wonderful opportunity to discover an on-trend design skill and learn to make your own crochet square: R120 (including materials). Workshop times: 10am – 12pm or 1pm – 3pm.
Micro-Mosaic Jewellery with Marcelino Manhula – Create your own micro-mosaic necklace! Fusing an ancient technique and contemporary art; go home with your own special, unique jewellery piece. Cost: R185 per session (including materials). Workshop times: Hourly from 10am – 4pm.
The Craft of Tufting by Spinnerkop – Make your own small rug or placemat with your initials. Explore the art of personalisation – tufting is such a huge trend at the moment! Cost: R600 (including materials). Workshop times: 10am – 1pm; or 1pm – 4pm.
Children’s Beading Workshop by Meschell’s Designs – Bring the kids to create personalised beaded pieces. Costs: Bracelet – R100, Keyring – R120, Necklace – R150, Bookmark – R120.
The Art of Tatting: Thread and Bead Art – Create your own gorgeous earrings with a variety of bead and thread colours. Cost: R250 per session (including materials). Workshop times: 11am – 1pm, or 2pm – 4pm.
Ceramic Workshop Talks at the Castle’s Iziko Ceramic Museum – Hosted by top SA ceramicist John Bauer. Cost: R99 for 10am – 11am session; R299 for 1pm – 2:30pm session (including a deeper discussion on local ceramics).
Paper Craft Workshop by Ana Loots from Bluum – Make some magic happen with paper – create your own paper protea fridge magnet. Cost: R150 (including materials). Workshop times: 10am – 12pm; or 1pm – 3pm.

Kuier@theCastlePop-ups, fashion shows take the stage. In addition, top local designer Thabo Makhetha presents a beautiful new pop-up boutique: LuxLane, featuring the latest fashion trends from several talented designers; and will host two fashion shows: at 12pm and another at 1:30pm.

The Best Thing Ever will also return this month with a lively pop-up market, bringing a host of local creatives from across the City to Kuier@TheCastle.

To make the event even more accessible, the Castle offers significant discounts on its entrance fee during every Kuier@TheCastle market day: adult tickets are R30, children and pensioners pay R15, and entry is free for children under 7. Secure free parking is available within the Castle premises via the Darling Street entrance.

Kuier has supported over 170 SMMEs since its launch in February including product, food vendors and workshop hosts; featuring regular participants and newcomers every month. Through supporting the event, visitors are supporting the rebuilding of our local economy and small manufacturing sector.
