DELI2SEA Ocean Awareness Event

The DELI2SEA ocean awareness event, hosted by the Good Machine, Chardonnay Deli, and Dalebrook Café, takes place on Sunday 4 December 2022.

The event gives participants the unique opportunity to enjoy the natural wonders of the Southern Cape Peninsula while supporting local ocean conservation efforts in a 17km walk/run/wiggle from Chardonnay Deli in Constantia to Dalebrook Tidal Pool and Café in Kalk Bay. Participants are encouraged to arrive from 05h15 to allow time for registration and the event starts at 06h00. The cut-off time is 14h00.

“We have curated this event so that people can come together to celebrate the health of their bodies, celebrate their community, and to set intentions for the health of our ocean. The ocean is under siege from plastics and pollution – what we as humans are doing is unacceptable! This event is a change catalyst to activate the ocean warrior in us all! And we’re supporting the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s work because they are working firsthand with animals which have been impacted by human negligence, and at the same time striving to empower individuals to be change agents through their education programmes,” said Gita Amber Carroll, Chief Kindness Curator for the Good Machine.

By purchasing an entry event participants will be supporting the education, conservation and research efforts of the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation. The Foundation was established by the Two Oceans Aquarium and is dedicated to inspiring communities to connect with and protect the ocean through education, conservation, and research.

  • The Foundation runs education courses onsite, online, and offsite for all age groups.

The Marine Wildlife Management Programme in partnership with the V&A Waterfront cares for the well-being of seals, otters, sunfish, seabirds, and other wildlife in the harbour and promotes harmonious living between people and the wild neighbours.

Its Turtle Conservation Centre gives hundreds of endangered turtles a second chance at survival.

One such turtle is Bob, a green turtle, who was rescued in 2014 and has spent the last eight years in rehabilitation. After many twists and turns in his rehabilitation journey, Bob is getting ready for the next step – release back into the wild.

“By raising ocean awareness the DELI2SEA event is also calling on everyone to protect Bob’s home. When he returns to the ocean, Bob will be facing many human-caused threats – plastic pollution, habitat destruction, careless use of fishing equipment. The actions you take at home play a role on the state of our oceans, Bob’s home, so choose sustainable seafood, reduce the amount of unnecessary plastic packaging you purchase, and ensure that plastic waste you produce is recycled. Together, our small actions have a big flipper effect!” said Talitha Noble, the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s Conservation Manager.

The Foundation also works collaboratively with partners around the world on innovative research projects to contribute to improved animal care and wise management of the ocean and through social research it encourages ocean-friendly behaviours, and engages in behavioural science to increase the impact of its campaigns, visitor experiences, and education programmes.

Participants have the option of two different entries – the classic entry-only ticket of R280, and the charity entry of R780 which includes a R500 donation to the event’s beneficiary to support their work.

Included in the race entry is:

• 25% discount code for online shopping at Hi-tec
• Chardonnay Deli & Dalebrook Café fueling station
• DJ on the decks at the start and finish lines
• Finish line beach cleanup
• Finish line celebratory snacks and drinks
• Sustainable every day eco-warrior prizes
• Save Our Seas Foundation Shark Education Centre Open Day

The first 40 buyers of the charity entry will receive a gift, sponsored by Hi-tec. This will be available for collection on race day, to use on the day.
