OBJECTS, MEMORIES AND THE THNGS WE CHOOSE TO KEEP

At Art@Africa Gallery, for his upcoming solo exhibition DISPLAY, Kobus Walker explores the idea of collecting objects of affection – things gathered through travel, gifted by friends and family, or inherited.

These objects carry more than their physical form. Arranged together, they become part of a visual narrative shaped by memory, nostalgia and joy.

Across 19 new works, Walker brings together decorative objects, landscapes, South African birds and reimagined classical portrait studies.

Patterned wallpaper introduces detail and rhythm throughout the compositions, creating a distinctive setting for the objects and imagery within each painting.
Nature remains an important part of Walker’s practice.

Art@Africa Gallery,

His connection to the African landscape began in childhood, growing up on a farm in Rustenburg, and birds, plants and landscapes continue to feature prominently in his work.
Classical painting is another thread running through the work.

Walker draws inspiration from artists including Rembrandt, Vermeer and Klimt, alongside South African artists Pierneef and Tretchikoff, reworking these influences through his own contemporary approach.

The result is a collection that rewards a closer look – layered with colour, composition, pattern and detail.
