Forming Impression: The Ghost in the Machine is a curated exhibition of original prints from the Artist Proof Studio and Warren Editions, presented by the AVA Gallery in partnership with Spier. It takes its title from Gilbert Ryle’s critique of Hume’s distinction between ideas and impressions, and questions whether South African printmakers, particularly those whose works can be characterised as abstract expressionism, are influenced by expressionism’s own claims that there is a duality inherent in expressive form. Participating artists include Doris Bloom, Jan-Henri Booyens, Katherine Bull, Paul Edmunds, Georgina Gratrix, William Kentridge, Mongezi Ncaphayi, Christian Nerf, Nkosana Nhlapo, Lucas Nkgweng, Jody Paulsen, Richard Penn, Chloë Reid, Matty Roodt, Michael Taylor, David Tsoka, Sara-Aimee Verity and Max Wolpe.
WHEN Until March 19. WHERE The AVA Gallery, 35 Church Street, Cape Town 8001.
