The title of this group exhibition, Earth Song, at The Cape Gallery suggests a synthetic connection between three sensual experiences, tactile (earth), aural (song) and visual (painting). Ceramics and sculpture have tangible dimensions.
Rhythm, melody, tempo and instrumentation contribute to the meaning of a song, an artist’s skilful understanding of design, colour, tone perspective make an artwork significant. While the earth is the material reference, the language used to describe a piece of art or a song is often surprisingly similar, a lyrical scene, a tone poem.
As creatures of this earth human beings play a significant role in the biodiversity and ecology of the planet. Urbanization, monoculture and technical achievements do disrupt nature. One way to re-assert a natural connection is to take time out; make a trip to the country, visit a park or garden and bring home storied memories of sights seen.
