A Springboard for Emerging Talent to Shape the Future of Art.

The Art.b Gallery is honoured to announce the return of the annual Vuleka Art Competition, a distinguished event that has been a cultural cornerstone of Southern Africa since its inception in 1963.

  • True to its name, Vuleka—meaning “open” in isiXhosa—the competition continues to embody inclusivity and serve as a springboard for emerging talent to shape the future of art.
  • Submissions: open 15 June. Close 3 July. Exhibition 2 August 2025

As the region’s longest-running art competition, Vuleka invites artists aged 18 and older who have not held a solo exhibition in the past three years to submit their works. It provides a critical platform for new voices in the art world, celebrating diversity and embracing submissions that range from traditional craftsmanship to bold, conceptual innovations. Each entry represents a unique perspective and contributes to the ever-evolving artistic landscape.

In times of economic uncertainty and dwindling sponsorships, the Vuleka Art Competition stands as a beacon of resilience and artistic excellence. Its enduring growth underscores the significance of cultivating and showcasing creative talent, solidifying its status as one of South Africa’s premier annual art events.

Participants are encouraged to present work that exemplifies originality, exceptional technical skill, and a courageous expression of individuality.

Accepted mediums include painting, sculpture, ceramics, drawing, photography, collage, assemblage, and digital art, offering a broad canvas for creative exploration. Due to logistical constraints, performance art will not be eligible for submission.

The adjudication process remains a hallmark of fairness and integrity, with three independent judges evaluating entries without influence from one another. This ensures that each work is assessed purely on merit, upholding the competition’s commitment to impartiality and excellence.

Throughout its six-decade history, Vuleka has been graced by contributions from many luminaries who later shaped the art world, including William Kentridge, Sue Williamson, Christo Coetzee, and Pippa Skotnes.

Vuleka Winner 2024, Zach Taljaard

Zach Taljaard

Last year’s winner, Zach Taljaard, captured the first prize with his striking ceramic work, A Very, Very Important Man. Reflecting on his journey, Taljaard shared, “Art is deeply personal—it demands vulnerability and the courage to share a piece of your soul. Vuleka not only challenges artists to push their boundaries but also offers a fair platform where art is celebrated purely for its merit. Winning this competition reminded me that it’s never too late to follow your dreams and let passion lead the way.”

The Conrad Theys first prize of R50,000 awaits this year’s top artist, promising a transformative opportunity for the next creative visionary. As Vuleka continues to inspire and empower, Art.b Gallery warmly invites submissions from artists eager to contribute to this storied legacy.
