Eliz-Marie Schoonbee, Chief Curator and Programme Co-ordinator at the Rupert Museum, tells us what to expect at their monthly Museum Saturday on 25 July. On the Arts Round Up on FMR she focuses on this family friendly last Saturday each month, with lots to keep you busy, engaged and having a good time!

Eliz-Marie focuses on the activities that are educational for the whole family. There is the Kids Creative Corner, which is free of charge, where children and family can be creative in this space. Eliz-Marie could not resist mentioning the Winter Wine Warmer, where 4 estates – Yardstick, Dorper, Karoo Hooglands and Vriesenhof – will be bringing their red wines for a tasting at a cost effective price of R120.00. Then there will be a Clay Workshop for adults. To check if you need to book for these events, just go to the Rupert Museum website.
No booking is required for the Kids Creative Corner – the workshop is on a walk-in basis. There are stations set up throughout the gallery spaces. So, it’s about engaging with the exhibition. It is to get young ones to think for themselves and be creative. It’s all happening between 10:00 and 16:00. Each station is a 15 to 20 minute stop, so it will take about an hour or an hour and a half to complete all the stations. That’s free for the kids and the family members who would like to join.
The regular Artist Spotlight Series is currently featuring the work of Cecil Skotnes. This is the third in a series, in a smaller gallery space, and currently focuses on works in the Rupert Art Foundation Collection by Cecil Skotnes and those from ‘The Amadlozi Group,’

If you view this selection of works you will see the impact they had on how South African art is portrayed.in the local art scene. Cecil Skotnes made a meaningful contribution to art education, and the Polly Street Centre is an example. The 1960’s and 70’s were hard times and Cecil Skotnes paved the way for struggling artists. He monitored them for a career in the arts.
So lots to see and do at the Rupert Museum on Museum Saturday on the 25th July. The restaurant is open and there’s live music from 1 o’clock. Everyone is welcome to wander through the museum, enjoying the special events and also visit the Cecil Skotnes exhibition. Multiple reasons to head for the Rupert Museum in Stellenbosch.
