A photographic exhibition, a play reading and performance art piece

Magnet Theatre is thrilled to announce FOR THE RECORD, a showcase of 3 developing works: A photographic exhibition, a play reading and performance art piece.

These works have been photographed, written, created and performed by the talented Magnet Theatre FirstRand FirstJob interns as part of the final project of their internship year.  The showcase will have 2 showings only on the 14th and 15th June, 2024 at Magnet Theatre.

The FirstRand First Job internship programme aims to equip youth, between the ages of 18 and 34 years old, with meaningful skills and work experience that will assist them to become more suitable for the job market. Magnet Theatre has partnered with FirstRand to host and mentor the interns for their 12-month work experience. Sibuyiselo Dywili joined Magnet Theatre as an Administration Intern; Phakamani Waka as a photography & videographer intern, and Smamkele Mentyisi as a Facilitation & Learner Support intern. All of the Magnet Theatre interns are artists in their own right and therefore as part of concluding their internships, Magnet Theatre has offered them an opportunity to all showcase individual pieces of works. The works are inspired by their individual experiences and creativity. The 3 developing works include a photographic exhibition,  BUYELEKHAYA, a play reading, The Salt Lesson, and a performance art piece AMAHLAZO: Monstering the Queer Body. This promises to be an entertaining and thought-provoking showcase of stories from this dynamic new talent!  Magnet Theatre is proud to support new voices and ground-breaking talent.

Magnet TheatreBUYELEKHAYA, conceptualised and photographed by Phakamani Waka, explores “Home” as a safe haven and a comfort zone, involving a deep emotional connection and a sense of rootedness that significantly influences our well-being and mental health.

The Salt Lesson, written by Sibuyiselo Dywili and read live by Jennie Reznek, Sipho Kalako, Gavin Werner and Themba Stewart.  The Salt Lesson explores the politics of race, belief, fatherhood in a post-apartheid South Africa, through the lens of a dementia patient and a forgotten son. What does it mean to be forgotten?

AMAHLAZO: Monstering the Queer Body conceived and directed by Smamkele Mentyisi and performed by Lukhanyiso Skhosana, with sound and visuals by Smamkele, Lukhanyiso and Simamkele Sitwebile. AMAHLAZO: Monstering the Queer Body, explores how the world employs monster(ing) to dehumanise queer identities in order to vindicate violence against the LGBTQI+ community.
