Peter van Straten, Hilary Iwanski & Robert Koch at The Cape Gallery

Gail Dorje, owner of The Cape Gallery, walks us through The Nature of Nature, a group exhibition featuring artists Hilary Iwanski, Robert Koch and Peter van Straten – on the Sanlam Art Round Up.

Listen to the Art Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm on Fridays at 17h30

The Cape Gallery is one of the oldest galleries in Cape Town and as Gail points out, it is in a heritage site. It was important to her to put together a traditional exhibition. “The Nature of Nature” was an idea that  came to her after reading a poem by Charles Tomlinson, looking at art through the ages. Today we are looking at nature through an ecological eye with more information about the science of it and how we perceive it today.

Peter van Straten, is a traditional painter but with an eerie quality. The work is ground in reality, with a more intensified vision of nature. It is work you have to see. There is a quality of luminosity, created by the layers of glazes in the style of Rembrandt.

Hilary Iwanski paints female nudes, through the eyes of a woman. These nudes are pure fantasy, but all very real.

Robert Koch grew up within a family of  painters. His works are focused on wildlife, but he is moving away and looking at the weather, the sky and life around him.

Robert Koch,

As Gail Dorje observes – this is a show that needs to be seen, to reveal The Nature of Nature. Do get there before the end of the month, when this exhibition ends, and ENJOY!
