Iziko South African National Gallery will host In Slavery’s Wake: Making Black Freedom in the World – a major international travelling exhibition by the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Cape Town marks the third stop on the exhibition’s global tour, following its debut abroad. The exhibition will be presented at the Iziko SANG, Company’s Garden, from 22 May to 31 October 2026.
This landmark exhibition is the result of an extraordinary international collaboration, led by the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture through a distinguished curatorial team and featuring contributions from leading museums worldwide as part of the Global Curatorial Project. Featuring 190 objects, 250 images and 10 multimedia interactives and films, this compelling mix of historical material, visual art, photography, film and interactive elements, invites audiences into a critical, intercontinental dialogue on the ongoing impacts of slavery and colonialism.
