On the Arts Round Up on FMR, and with Youth Day on the 16th of June, Janet Jobson, CEO of the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, focuses on their Youth Outreach Programme, that reaches approximately 6 000 young people annually.

Janet Jobson emphasises that legacy is not a museum piece – it’s a legacy they want to inspire in children and young people across the country and the world. The Truth To Power Exhibition is used to explore how they can build their own agency in a democracy – how they can take action just like the children of 1976 in Soweto. The uprising is a centre-piece of the exhibition and a point the children are incredibly drawn to – the idea that 20 000 children mobilised on the streets of Soweto. Although we call it Youth Day, it was children of 10, 11 and 12 years old – a fact that unlocks the children the Legacy Foundation are working with. There is a sense that they can do something now, and stand up for justice in their school, family or community. It’s wonderful to experience this reaction to the exhibition.
How do we make sure it’s not simply an intellectual experience, says Janet, but also ensure they are feeling moved and inspired to take action out of this visit to the Truth To Power Exhibition.
TUTU, the documentary that premiered in Africa at the Encounters South African International Documentary Festival will also move and inspire one. The film can still be seen over this weekend at the Labia Theatre in Cape Town on 13 June and Ster-Kinekor in Pretoria and Johannesburg on 14 June, For details check Encounters website,. Janet refers to TUTU, (winner of the 2026 Berlin Peace Film Prize) as a beautiful experience. It reflects on the depth of what Tutu gave to the nation and the depth pf his humanity. Not only does it give a sense of the man, but also the powerful presence of his wife Leah, She was a powerhouse that was also the love of his life. Janet sums up the documentary as a love story that we need to see.
