Every Swaying Frond has a Story to Tell

There is something magical about the Two Oceans Aquarium’s Kelp Forest Exhibit. Watch towering giant sea bamboo sway with the water as fish weave through the fronds and marine life finds shelter among the kelp.

But this is more than an exhibit. It is a living underwater forest that showcases one of South Africa’s most important marine ecosystems.

Kelp Forest, From collecting fresh kelp in the wild to carefully replanting each holdfast inside the exhibit, the Collections team, aquarists and divers work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep this incredible ecosystem thriving. Kelp forests provide food, shelter and breeding grounds for countless marine species, while also playing an important role in absorbing carbon dioxide and supporting a healthy ocean.

Only a handful of aquariums around the world display a living kelp forest, making the Two Oceans Aquarium one of the few places where visitors can experience this extraordinary habitat up close.

Next time you visit the Aquarium, take a moment to look closely at the Kelp Forest. Every swaying frond has a story to tell.
