On the FMR Arts Round Up, Marlene le Roux, CEO of Artscape, introduces the acclaimed Bold Beauty Project (BBP), making its African debut, with the opening of the ‘As She Is’ exhibition at 33BREE on Wednesday 5 August, as part of the HEAT Winter Festival.

Marlene emphasises that BBP is a heart project, that focuses on women with disabilities. It’s about see me, you can be bold, anyone you want to be, if you are given the resources and the platform. The Bold Beauty Project started in the United States. Eva Rita was the founder there, putting women with disabilities into beautiful outfits and declaring that this is what they are doing with their lives. In Cape Town, the BBP initiative is partnering with the Amy Foundation Trust, The Artists Gallery and Artscape, which is accessible to all.
As a woman with a disability, curating the exhibition, it was important to look at the full spectrum of disabilities. She selected models with different disabilities and also took into account the different cultural backgrounds to showcase, through the lens of disability who we are as South Africans.
This is a photographic exhibition and everyone contributed on a voluntary, free of charge basis. The professional photographers and The Artists Gallery were fantastic. We have an exhibition that makes you think and look at people differently. The curation was a collaboration with the artists the models, the photographers, lighting designers, partners and carers. This was a project with a difference.
The exhibition is called ‘As She Is’ and it speaks to every woman – you can be whatever you want to be – bold, beautiful and believe in yourself! A great message that comes across very strongly in this exhibition at 33BREE which is the annex of The Artists Gallery just 50 metres away.
This exhibition is also timed for Women’s Month and Artscape’s Women’s Humanity Festival. VISIT 33BREE to be informed, excited and impressed by the beautiful work and the positive message!
