Sanlam Arts Round Up Makes Waves

Curators of Indigo Waves and Other Stories talk us through this exhibition at Zeitz MOCAA that renavigates the Afrasian Seas and notions of diaspora.

Listen to the Sanlam Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm every Friday at 16h10

Curators Natasha Ginwala from Colombo, Sri Lanka and Michelangelo Corsaro in Berlin, Germany take us through the process to arrive at this exhibition that brings together different communities in Africa and Asia.  The exhibition approaches the Indian Ocean as a communal horizon from which to read Afrasian (that is, belonging to both Africa and Asia) histories of forced and unforced movement through currents of mercantile and colonial empire.

Natasha Ginwala re-looks the Indian Ocean from centuries long history of exchange and connecting of multi-cultural spaces.

Michelangelo Corsaro focuses on the artists from Afroasian territories, and the diaspora, drawing connections between each other.

As Koyo Kouoh, Zeitz MOCAA Executive Director and Chief Curator observed: “It is only through the contributions of poets, artists, filmmakers and storytellers that we can reimagine ourselves in ways not dictated by dominant histories. We are showing that our voices and narratives carry the beauty of our entanglements and relationships over centuries, and now is the time that it takes centre stage.” This is what comes through clearly in the interview with Natasha Ginwala and Michaelangelo Corsaro.  The third curator of  Indigo Waves and Other Stories is Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung.
