The City’s first pilot online market has gone live! And My Cape Town Market at Green Point Uraban Park is open this weekend. It’s time to shop!
Purchasing items from informal traders, vendors and crafters is only a click away, as the City of Cape Town launched its first online market, which went live from Thursday 27 May 2021 until Wednesday 9 June 2021. Visit
This is in addition to the three-day physical My Cape Town Market at the Green Point Urban Park that is running this weekend, from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 May 2021.
The public have the opportunity to support small businesses at two City-run markets, while adhering to Covid-19 protocols.
Pilot Cape Town Online Market:
Online shoppers can look forward to over 400 products from 110 informal traders, vendors and crafters when visiting the pilot Cape Town Online Market.
Products range from baby clothing to lifestyle items, home décor, fashion and beauty items, homemade furniture, pet items and kitchenware.
This initiative, spearheaded by the City’s Urban Management Directorate, is a pilot e-commerce platform showcasing Cape Town-based vendors and aims to provide support to small businesses by selling their products online.
Earlier this month, interested parties were invited to register for the online market. They received professional assistance with online product displays through product styling and photography, and now that they are live, hassle-free delivery options.
‘I am excited to see the City pilot this online market initiative. Reason being, last year July, when the City engaged with the leadership of all informal traders’ associations under the theme, ‘Trading and living amid Covid-19’, we made a commitment to find innovative ways of doing business and assisting the informal sector with increased economic opportunities to minimise the negative economic impact caused by the pandemic. Today’s launch is that commitment in action, and so we call on the public to support these small businesses by browsing and shopping at the Cape Town Online Market,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.

My Cape Town Market
This three-day physical market showcasing 30 vendors is taking place at the Green Point Urban Park from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 May 2021. Covid-19 protocols will be in place.
This includes a young entrepreneurs market, activities for children and a Wall of remembrance for all those that have been affected by Covid-19.
Alderman Twigg will launch the market on Friday. Local artist Jarret Rickets will also be performing on the day.

The City’s Area Economic Development Department, in the Urban Management Directorate, aims to regulate, manage and develop the informal sector as well as to drive local economic development across the city. ‘We focus on creating an environment that stimulates sustainable economic growth, investment and job creation as well as positioning Cape Town as forward looking globally competitive City.
‘Through such initiatives as the pilot online market and the My Cape Town physical market, we hope to provide an economic opportunity for traders to supplement their income in these trying economic times and hopefully contribute towards sustained livelihoods. We also hope that the online market will present an opportunity for our traders to be recognised and supported by a much broader audience and buyers beyond the borders of Cape Town and South Africa. This market is also a tool that will introduce traders to the online market space and hopefully give them the confidence to adapt to the ‘new normal’ and explore online opportunities beyond the 9th of June 2021.
