Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that’s changing the lives of the youth of Khayelitsha through cycling.
Take a tour of their brightly coloured site and hear their story of how they have trained and nurtured kids in the neighbourhood to become biking and BMX champions competing at professional level at international events.
Formally established in 2004, the Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy trains young people to become great cyclists as well as successful contributing members of their community. Their after-school programs keep kids engaged and active and teaches them about discipline, team spirit, and dedication.
The Academy helped to establish South Africa’s first ‘all black’ professional cycling team and hopes to encourage many more young people to start riding.
Book a 45-minute tour of their site where they will show you the work the academy does. They also host cycling lessons with their Learn2Cycle initiative, which is open to the public.
