Robben Island Museum is a World Heritage Site, and is arguably best known for the maximum-security prison, where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated. A visit to the island will however reveal its multi-layered history that dates back to the early 1300s and offers a bespoke public and cultural heritage experience that stretches beyond Madiba’s cell, to include among others the Sobukwe Complex, Lime-stone quarry and visitors centre, while simultaneously offering an array of natural wildlife in this marine protected site. Daily tours are conducted and include a personalised tour of the maximum security prison, narrated by former political prisoners through memories and experiences.
All ferries depart from Nelson Mandela Gateway, Clock Tower precinct, V&A Waterfront.
