Meet Sarah Haines, Director at LMTF, and Martinus Boshoff, CEO of Century City

Sarah Haines explains that Long March to Freedom was approached by Century City and Rotary to host a Peace Garden adjacent to the Peace Pole and the procession of life sized bronzes. The Peace Pole, with its message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” ties in perfectly with a Peace Garden, reflecting the message of Long March To Freedom to strive for peace and democracy, and harmony and human rights. The garden is a complimentary initiative – a landscape with plantings and trees and benches to sit, relax and contemplate. Entrance to the Long March To Freedom and Rotary Peace Park is a R20.00 donation (see details below).

Long March to Freedom, Century City,

The collection of 100 life sized bronzes of South African and international figures – and growing – makes this the largest collection of bronzes in the world!

Martinus Boshoff points out the Long March to Freedom ties in with the  Century City Art Trail, which was started in 2017. Art is important as it drives community engagement and initiative. Art provides a sense of  a city’s history past and present. Long March To Freedom is an integral part of Century City and closes the loop of the Art Trail. If you start from the Cape Town side of Century City and see the 29 locations along the trail, you will be leaving the best for last when you arrive at the Long March to Freedom. The bronze procession cannot be overlooked in terms of it providing Century City with a past, present and cultural significance. This is an important destination that should not be overlooked.

Summing up Sarah stresses that the Long March To Freedom is a MUST-SEE place to visit! Get there for a moving experience and an opportunity to engage with one’s history.
