The Sanlam Arts Round Up for 2023 – and the multiple reasons that Cape Town was rated 3rd in Time Out’s World’s Best Cities for Culture!

This review at year end, is an opportunity to understand why Time Out placed Cape Town 3rd in it’s ranking of the World’s Best Cities for Culture – ahead of New York, London and Paris! And two of the reasons given were Zeitz MOCAA and the Norval Foundation.
We spoke to Curator Beata America last week about Seers Seekers Soothsayers one of the two lens-based exhibitions at Zeitz MOCAA that you need to spend time with to fully engage. Self as a Forgotten Monument is the first museum solo exhibition by Mame-Diarra Niang, organised as a survey of the artist’s practice over the past decade, and the other lens-based exhibition worth a visit. Sala, the new permanent collection exhibition at Zeitz MOCAA is also mentioned.
Norval Foundation has the extensive Alexis Preller retrospective – Mythical Lexicon – positioning this South African artist in a global context. The Walter Oltmann exhibition in the Atrium and the Cinga Samson exhibitions are additional reasons for visiting the Norval.
Moving into 2024, we will be speaking to Shanaaz Galant of the IZIKO Slave Lodge about their new exhibition ‘The Names of Freedom’. The Slave Lodge is in fact one of the nine IZIKO Museums featured on the 2024 Art Craft + Museums Map.
Another useful Curated Route to refer to is the UCT Summer School Heritage Route. Designed for their centenary celebration, it focuses on heritage sites in and around the UCT campus.
