Lots happening, as always at Sarah’s Ceramic Gallery, but a new focus has been designing exciting dinnerware ranges. Sarah comments that she is following her late father, David Walter’s footsteps as he worked extensively in this field. Shas been collaborating with local chefs, who heave given her a lot of freedom to work with their local designer and to feed into that which has been fantastic. Local design is what it’s all about.
If we open the kiln now, what will we find? Sarah tells of her trip to the bush with other local potters to create work for an upcoming exhibition probably titled Wild Earth – work inspired by the bush environment. One of the artists is Tanya Bub who is doing bush inspired sculptures. Sarah’s ceramics will be influenced by the colours and textures of the bush. Craig Irving, who has been away from pots for 30 years, is doing domestic ware, with a bush twist, working with his daughter.
What are the trends over time in the ceramics field? You have to keep on your toes because things change all the time. High end, bespoke dinnerware is certainly a feature. It’s a move from the classic to chefs refining and bespoke their dinnerware to their food. She’s not doing ordinary plates – rather pebbles and pedestals, cups like a leaf – it’s all very imaginative and immersive. The reduction firing is for dinnerware
The response to a more textured look has been positive. Sarah explains that she uses two firing techniques. The electric kiln is for the more textured and more expressive, one of a kind work. The reduction kiln for dinnerware, bowls, cups and mugs. People are looking for things to use
