Seers Seekers Soothsayers is one of two lens-based exhibitions at Zeitz MOCAA, and Curatorial Assistant Beata America walks us through this exhibition on the Sanlam Arts Round Up.Â
Listen to the Sanlam Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm on Fridays at 17h30
Beata begins by explaining what is meant by ‘lens-based‘, that is work produced through the camera lens or video. This is also the first time that the museum has two exhibitions that focuses on the moving images of film and photography. Seers Seekers Soothsayers is all video, curated by herself and Tandazani Dhlakama. Self as a Forgotten Monument by Mame-Diarra Niang is photography with one video installation and also on the 3rd floor .
There are seven artists in the exhibition. The number seven is spiritually significant in various belief systems in the past and present.
The work by Buhlebezwe Siwani, an artist and sangoma currently based in Amsterdam and Cape Town, is referred to as highlighting a rethinking of land issues, particularly on wine farms with regard to black women, their role and displacement. The farm where this was filmed is in Tulbagh and still has an old slave bell. [Title: AmaHubo, 2018, Digital 4K video, three panel projection with sound, Duration: 13min 01 sec. See photo above]
Gladys Kalichini is the Zambian artist whose work you will see as you enter the exhibition. This is a 4 screen film installation that focuses on care and cleansing rituals. Singly and in pairs you will see women washing their hands and feet, [ …these practices are done in sharing her stories, 2020, Four channel video projection with sound, towels, metal bowls, lace. Duration: 4min 25sec.]
You will need to visit the exhibition to see all seven works – and be prepared to take your time! Participating lens-based artists include Gladys Kalichini, Latedjou, Sekai Machache, Nyancho NwaNri, Pamina Sebastião, Buhlebezwe Siwani, Helena Uambembe.
