Signature Art Gallery is delighted to announce the culmination of its innovative and highly successful Secret Signature Art Initiative, with the much-anticipated reveal of the artists behind the anonymously exhibited artworks taking place on Thursday, 4 June, from 6pm to 8pm at the gallery in Long Street.
The initiative invited artists to create original A4 artworks without signing them, allowing collectors and art enthusiasts to bid solely on the merit of each piece rather than the reputation of its creator. The result has been an engaging and thought-provoking exhibition that challenged perceptions, encouraged discovery, and generated enthusiastic bidding from both seasoned collectors and first-time buyers.
Over the past month, visitors have viewed and bid on a diverse collection of anonymous works, with each piece carrying a starting bid of R2,500. As bids increased, so too did the excitement surrounding the mystery of who might be behind each artwork.
The reveal evening will announce the highest bidders and, for the first time, disclose the identities of the participating artists. Guests will discover whether their chosen work was created by an emerging talent or an established and highly sought-after name.
The initiative has also served a greater purpose, with proceeds being shared equally between the artists, Signature Art Gallery, and the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa, helping support children and families affected by childhood cancer.
“Secret Signature was conceived as a celebration of artistic talent in its purest form,” says Craig Morris, owner of Signature Art Gallery. “By removing the artist’s name from the equation, we invited collectors to connect directly with the artwork itself. The response has exceeded our expectations, and we are excited to finally reveal the remarkable artists who participated.”
Members of the public are invited to attend the reveal evening, enjoy a glass of wine, view the exhibition, and share in the excitement as the winning bidders and artists are announced. Bidding remains open until the 4th June: Phone in bids close at 12pm 4th June and in-gallery bids close at 4pm on the 4th June. Current bids can be viewed on the Signature Art Gallery website, and interested buyers may submit bids directly through the gallery
