Everard Read, Cape Town, presents Penelope Stutterheime’s latest solo exhibition of painting, titled ‘A Sense of Place’.
These colourful paintings – some quiet, some joyful – present a step into new territory for abstractionist Stutterheime. In ‘A Sense of Place’, Stutterheime explores the concept of self by locating herself as artist in a physical place.
Inspired by her recent travels, Stutterheime examines the relationship between her self and her location – Cape Town, McGregor, Greyton, San Francisco & Istanbul, amongst others. These richly coloured and carefully daubed emotional landscapes show an intuitive response to landscape, space and the myriad experiences each place offers up.
Stutterheime was born in 1958 in Cape Town, South Africa. She is largely self-taught and has participated in various exhibitions locally and internationally. This is her third solo show with Everard Read, Cape Town.
