A solo exhibition of paintings by Claire Denarie Soffietti opens on Sunday, 22nd March 2015 at 4:30 p.m. at The Cape Gallery.

Claire Denarie Soffietti was born and raised in Versailles, France and has lived in Italy, Barbados and South Africa. Her appreciation for the abundant beauty and natural resources of South Africa spurred a great fascination with the African continent.

Claire expresses no desire to create naturalistic depictions of the ‘real’ world. Colour undoubtedly plays a fundamental role in making her emotionally charged works particularly unique and memorable. The tendency towards pure, bold colours could be attributed to the ideals of subjective use of colour shared by the early 20th Century Fauves painters that influence her. Claire has been known to describe nature as ‘…mysterious and perfect…’ something which ‘…ought to remain untouched…’ This attitude is reflected in the bold, fresh simplicity of her paintings.

While she is instinctively swayed to look to the grotesque of human nature, the subtlety in revealing these inner attitudes preserves the beauty of her work. Though her paintings occasionally feature iconic figures, they always retain a certain enigmatic disposition.

Claire has exhibited on both local and international platforms including the Agora Gallery in Chelsea, New York. Top Billing, as well as Habitat Magazine and House and Garden have featured her work.
