Women’s Month of August coming up, time for the 20th annual Artscape Women’s Humanity Festival…and Woman Zone will be there! “Hope to see you at some of the many events on offer…”

In honour of the theme for this year’s Artscape Women’s Humanity Festival “Women in Action” – the Everywoman Project has created two special Textile Artworks.
“We unveiled the first at the AWHF launch in July, marking 55 years of the Artscape building. It includes words (and a disability symbol) – in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa – that represent just some of the many aspects of this centre for the arts.”
A small glimpse of the 2nd Artwork, commemorating 70 years since The Women’s March of 1956 can be see above. This will be unveiled at 2pm on Saturday 8 August in the Chandelier Foyer. It features the names of the four women who led the 20,000 women strong March of 1956: Sophie Williams de Bruyn, Rahima Moosa, Helen Joseph and Lilian Ngoyi as well as the new ‘women’ design shweshwe fabric.
WOMAN ZONE AND ARTSCAPE WOMEN’S HUMANITY FESTIVAL
As an Associate of the iconic Artscape theatre complex, each and every year Woman Zone is involved in the Artscape Women’s Humanity Festival. This year the programme includes:
• August 5th: A Write Your Life workshop as part of the 1000 Women interactive event (This is a closed event)
• August 8th: 13.00: The screening of Bones, a documentary directed by Nomandla Vilakazi exploring the repatriation of Saartjie Baartman, including the words of late poet Diana Ferrus.
• August 8th: 14.00 Also sees the unveiling of the EVERYWOMAN Textile Artwork commemorating the 70th anniversary of The Women’s March. This will in tandem with the panel discussion 70 years since The Women’s March against injustice – Where are we now?
• August 9th: WOMAN’S DAY 9 AUGUST The Women’s Humanity Walk, symbolically from the Civic Centre to the steps of Artscape followed by Stop the Silence, a Women for Change campaign and blessings by the Cape Town Interfaith Initiaitive
• August 9th: Woman Zone hosts a special Woman’s Day show on Fine Music Radio 101.3 from 15.00 to 16.00 featuring women in the arts appearing at the Festival, in conversation with presenter Theresa Smith.
