From African Earth; a Celebration of Ceramics is the umbrella title for a month long celebration of ceramics in November 2014.

Ralph Johnson and the Ceramics South Africa team aim to showcase some of the finest handmade ceramics produced  in our city, our country and our continent.

According to Johnson, the design dialogue surrounding ceramics include talk of artisan sustainability – an informal market in South Africa that can, with added emphasis on the wonders of ceramics, grow and help bolster this informal market.

November 2014, has been designated as ceramic month for the World Design Capital 2014 #WDC577

This is a collaborative exhibition with Iziko at the Castle showcasing our African vessel heritage with  a contemporary exhibition of pots  in the same genre together with an educational component.

Open Studios, Potters Markets and the Art in Clay Festival in Franschhoek will also be events linked to this project.

David Walters and the Ceramics Gallery will be playing a large part in most of these events, with Franschhoek Art in Clay – events at each art gallery, featuring their own stable of ceramic artists in unique shows – opening in seven art galleries around the village on the 25th October. These include La Motte, Grande Provence, EBONY, IS Art, the Gallery in the Yard, Kim Donaldson and the Ceramics Gallery in Dirkie Uys Street.
