What book lovers can look forward to at the South African Book Fair:

This three-day celebration of the written word will offer visitors over 120 events, access to 100 authors, illustrators, storytellers, book critics, puppet shows, book launches and book club brunches on offer under one roof.
The Fair has been divided into nine predominant themes, to suit every book connoisseurs’ taste. Here is a breakdown of what you can expect at the 2014 South African Book Fair.
Girls love books – a three -day soiree with Susan Lewis
Don’t miss bestselling author Susan Lewis chatting about life, love and everything in between. This theme is perfect for book club babes!
Stories to inspire and entertain you
From the adventure-seeking authors of Poles Apart – Sean Disney and Vaughn de la Harpe to the lessons learnt from coaching champions with Marco Botha, author of Coach, this theme focuses on the inspirational authors of our time.
Sean Disney and Vaughn de la Harpe will discuss their journey in summiting the world’s seven highest peaks and journeying to the North and South Poles, which led to their book Poles Apart.
Marco Botha, author of Coach, will explore what it takes to coach champions. His book, Coach features: Heyneke Meyer, Ian Schwartz, Sherylle Calder, Brendan Venter, Paul Treu, Gary Kirsten and Paddy Upton. Join Marco Botha for a discussion where he delves into the minds, personalities and successes of these South African coaches.
The motivational authors of Books and Bricks – a success story at Manyano School, Sindiwe Magona and Harvard graduate Dr Al Witten will tell the story of a community that moved away from gangsterism, alcoholism and unemployment.
Other highlights will include a talk by award-winning Setswana author Sabata-Mpho Mokae, who will discuss how writing in his mother-tongue opened a world of possibilities for his expression and none other than Pieter-Dirk Uys, who has written not only his own memoirs but also autobiographies of his alter-egos Evita Bezuidenhout and Bambi Kellermann will discuss the nature of autobiography.
Current affairs
Pertinent debates around issues that we as South Africans face today are also included in the line-up. Join the discussion around the future of the book and e-learning in the South African schooling system.
School Principals and parents Marc Falconer and Gavin Fish, with Obami founder Barbara Mallison will talk about what it takes to educate a child in the 21st Century.
Judge Edwin Cameron, talented author of Justice – A Personal Account will argue that the Constitution offers South Africans our best chance for a just society.
Rolling up our sleeves – a series of in-depth panel discussions that drive to the heart of the matter
This theme will include serious and thought-provoking debates about some of the current issues that our leading thinkers are facing today – Twenty years of democracy: Can the past inform and inspire a better future for South Africa?, Muslims in the South African imagination and how the spirit of Islam manifests in food, the arts and literature and the role of homosexuality in literature today.
Featured authors that will dominate this theme include Prince Mashele, author of The Fall of the ANC, Dr Xolela Mangcu, author of Becoming Worthy Ancestors and Professor Njabulo Ndebele, author of Reconsidering the Ordinary and The Cry of Winnie Mandela.
Digital books and the future of the book
Those who prefer to catch up on their reading digitally will also find a niche for themselves, with the digital theme at the South African Book Fair.
This theme will address the future of the book as well as the classroom of the future. Ben Williams, Sunday Times books editor and founder of Books LIVE, will talk about the Future of the Book – is there one and what does it look like?
Getting published
A must for aspirant writers and publishers, this series offers workshops and presentations on everything from proofreading to translation, illustration to creative writing. Find out how successful writers write for foreign audiences and how to shoot the lights out with book sales. Also part of the programme is writing and illustration workshops for teens.
A presentation of South Africa’s vibrant Afrikaans literary world
Afrikaans literature fans will get to rub shoulders with authors Chanette Paul, Deon Meyer and Steve Hofmeyer.
Kidzone – for kids age 3 – 7
Kids can fall in love with books, storytelling, show-and-tell, book-inspired craft activities, pirate and princess high tea on the high seas, book breakfasts, puppet shows, and of course some of their favourite larger-than-life book characters – Peter Rabbit, Spot the Dog, Maisy Mouse, Wally, and the inimitable Gruffalo!
Tweens and teens
Young aspirant writers between the ages of 8 and 15 can join in a writing workshop to get the creative juices flowing. Marjorie van Heerden will talk them through characterisation, plot and all aspects of creating a compelling story. There is limited space, so remember, first come first served.
Described as vibrant, colourful and captivating, the Fair aims to create an unforgettable event that has something for everyone. According to Batya Green-Bricker, the Programme Director for the South African Book Fair, ‘The uniqueness of the South African Book Fair is the depth and breadth of the events on offer. There is truly something for everyone! Books offer escape, inspiration, education and entertainment. Whoever you are, whatever your reason for reading or picking up a book, the SABF is a space and time dedicated to making all sorts of books come to life.’
