Wild flower splendour, history and heritage will once again delight visitors next weekend as the City of Cape Town joins the Mamre community to host the popular annual Wild Flower Show.
The Mamre Wild Flower Show takes place next weekend, from 16 – 18 September 2016, in a large marquee next to the historical mill and surrounded by seven declared national monuments known as Die Werf.
‘We are proud to host this wild flower show, which not only creates economic opportunities for the local residents, but showcases the area’s floral splendour in the marquee filled with wild flowers from the region and hills surrounding Mamre.
‘In addition, this area is rich in heritage and history, and visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about this part of our province,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Economic Development, Councillor Eddie Andrews.
On Friday 16 September, visitors can enjoy local cuisine and kontreikos and go on horse- and donkey-cart trips through the village, while entertainers and artists will perform throughout the day.
A fun walk opens festivities on Saturday 17 September at 09:30 and a parade down the main road will start at 11:00.
On Sunday 18 September, an interfaith church sermon starts at 09:30, followed immediately by a gospel show at 10:00. At 15:00 it is time for the Viva Opera Concert in the church, featuring eight professional singers from the Cape Town Opera and the Opera School of the University of Cape Town.
Tickets for the concert are R60. To book, residents should please call 082 749 4457 or send an e-mail to: thysfreeff@isat.co.za.
The show, now in its 15th year, showcases the town’s wild flowers and provides an economic injection into the community.
